An electro-mechanical device, which upon energization, opens or closes a passage controlling fluid flow. A solenoid valve is said to be normally closed if the fluid passage is closed when the valve is not energized. A solenoid valve is said to be normally open if the fluid passage is open when the valve is not energized. Solenoid valves are used in quick-response on/off applications.
